A remarkably original short-wheelbase 911L equipped with Porsche’s innovative four-speed Sportomatic transmission. Never restored, it retains its factory character and carries exceptional provenance through legendary Porsche importer Vasek Polak.

Introduced for the 1968 model year, the 911L filled the gap between the 911T and 911S, pairing luxury appointments with the proven 130-horsepower flat-six. In North America, where emissions regulations delayed the arrival of the fuel-injected 911S, the 911L became Porsche’s flagship 911, making it one of the most desirable U.S.-market models of its year.

Its optional Sportomatic transmission remains one of Porsche’s most fascinating engineering achievements. It used a torque converter and a vacuum-operated clutch activated by touching the gear lever, delivering clutch-free driving while preserving manual gear selection, a uniquely Porsche interpretation of an automatic transmission.

Finished in correct Light Ivory over black, this unrestored example retains its original Sportomatic gearbox, factory wood-rimmed steering wheel, beautifully preserved interior, original tinted glass, excellent brightwork, and correct deep-six Fuchs alloy wheels, restored by Weidman. The rust-free chassis is accompanied by a documented history and remains a highly authentic survivor.

Its provenance is equally compelling. The car was traded to Vasek Polak, a renowned Porsche importer and dealer in Manhattan Beach, California, who acquired it for his wife, Anna-Maria, to evaluate Porsche’s new Sportomatic transmission. After she decided it was not to her taste, the car was retained in the Polak collection, adding an exceptional chapter to the history of this highly original early 911.
