When Maserati introduced the Quattroporte in 1963, it created an entirely new category of automobile. Until then, buyers chose either a luxurious limousine or a high-performance grand touring car. The Quattroporte combined both: a race-bred V8 beneath an elegant four-door body, the fastest production sedan in the world, and the template for every executive performance sedan that followed.

RGB Motors is proud to present a 1968 Maserati Quattroporte Tipo AM107, presented in its factory-correct Verde Bosco Metallizzato over Marrone Connolly leather and among the finest surviving examples of the first series. Chassis AM107*2088 carries Maserati Classiche certification confirming its matching-numbers authenticity, and follows a nut-and-bolt restoration completed to concours standards.

Styled by Pietro Frua and handcrafted by Carrozzeria Vignale, the Quattroporte married the elegance of an Italian coach-built grand tourer with genuine comfort for four adults. Beneath its long hood lay Maserati’s quad-cam V8, derived directly from the celebrated 5000 GT. This was not merely a luxurious sedan: it was built for sustained high-speed continental travel, with four-wheel disc brakes, independent front suspension, and the refinement expected by heads of state, industrialists, celebrities and racing enthusiasts alike. Only about 830 first-series Quattroporte were produced between 1963 and 1969, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce today.

Completed at Modena in June 1968, chassis AM107*2088 was delivered on 17 June to Mr. Berald Rottemberg of New York, then chief executive of Studebaker-Worthington, complete with No. 5 aluminum wheels, toolkit and radio. In February 1973 the car returned to the Maserati factory, where the original BorgWarner three-speed automatic was replaced with the highly desirable ZF S5-325 five-speed manual gearbox, and the body was refinished in Rosso Fuoco.

More than four decades later, during an uncompromising restoration spanning nearly a decade, the current owner returned the Quattroporte to its original factory specification. The body was once again finished in its correct Verde Bosco Metallizzato, faithfully restoring the automobile to the appearance in which it left the Maserati factory in June 1968, while retaining the five-speed manual gearbox Maserati itself installed.

Discovered after years of warehouse storage and acquired in 2016, the car was returned to original factory configuration rather than cosmetically refurbished, with every major system restored or rebuilt using New Old Stock components wherever possible. The bodywork, brightwork, paint and final assembly were entrusted to Al Day Restorations in Ocala, Florida, with the final paintwork by Luc Grondin. The interior was retrimmed in premium Italian leather from Maserati’s recommended source and completed by Gold Coast Interiors in Fort Lauderdale.

Power comes from the original 4.7-liter V8, expertly rebuilt by Jacques Di Borgo of MIE, one of the world’s foremost Maserati specialists. The factory air-conditioning system was restored by Kels Classic Auto Air, and final sorting, mechanical development and concours preparation were completed by renowned Maserati marque specialist Kevin Kruszeski.

The result is a Quattroporte that meets concours standards while retaining the character and driving experience Maserati intended. The 4.7-liter V8 delivers smooth yet authoritative power through the ZF five-speed manual, while the independent front suspension and four-wheel disc brakes inspire impressive confidence even by modern standards. The cabin surrounds the driver with beautifully crafted wood, leather and Smiths instrumentation, equal parts grand touring machine and Italian luxury automobile.

Following its award-winning debut at the Delray Beach and Palm Beach Concours d’Élégance, the car has covered approximately 150 miles. Combining documented factory provenance, matching-numbers authenticity, Maserati Classiche certification and concours-winning presentation, chassis AM107*2088 stands among the finest documented 4.7-liter Quattroporte available anywhere in the world.
